Advice on What to Eat Before You Exercise

No matter whether you are trying to lose weight, put on muscles, or simply trying to get into the best shape of your life, it’s important that you eat the right things before you exercise, or you are likely to be dragging throughout your whole workout. Knowing what to eat before you exercise can make a huge difference in the quality of your workout and how great you feel when you’re finished.

For the Early Birds

If you love to workout in the morning so that you can then enjoy the rest of your day without the thought of a workout looming over your head, then you need to make sure that you do eat something beforehand. Trying to workout on an empty stomach can make it difficult for you to complete the workout, and it may leave you feeling dizzy. Allowing yourself time between eating and working out will keep you from dealing with a stomach cramp.

If you are going to be eating within an hour of getting out of bed, then stick with under 300 calories. Oatmeal, a smoothie, or even orange juice are all great options. Make sure that you enjoy a mix of carbs and protein so that you can digest them quickly, but not so fast that your sugar spikes and crashes. Some great morning meals include bananas, raisins, whole grain breads, and a little bit of peanut butter.

Working Out Around Lunch

If you like to workout around lunchtime, then you need to make sure that you refuel, as your breakfast will have worn off by now. Try to eat a balanced meal around one or two hours before you workout. Aim for 300-400 calories and choose foods that are mostly carbs with a mix of protein and fat. Avoid anything that is really high in protein or fat.

Some of your best ideas for food include fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, or a small sandwich. Meal replacement bars are also a great option here, and they will help you power through your workout. If you are going to eat just a small snack before your workout, then make sure that you eat something larger and balanced afterwards to help keep up your energy.

Working Out After Work

After work, you have to fuel up before working out so that you don’t end up in a drive-through. A couple hours before you leave work, make sure to eat around 400-500 calories, and reach for items like a whole grain muffin, cheese and crackers, or even veggies with a side of cottage cheese.

When You’re Finished at the Gym

Always make sure that when you have finished working out, you take time to eat and drink in order to replenish any of the nutrients and fluids that your body has lost. Failing to do so can make it really difficult for your body to recover properly from your workout. Choosing a balanced meal that consists of fat, protein, and carbs will help your body recover from your workout, preventing you from accidentally overeating.
